Aboriginal Medical Services
Our History & Future
The Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern was established in 1971 and was the first Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service in Australia!
We strive to improve the quality and range of our services through community interaction and evaluation.
The Aboriginal Medical Service Redfern (AMS Redfern) was established in 1971 and was the first Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service in Australia and is now a key Aboriginal community organization from which most Aboriginal Medical Services around NSW have stemmed.

The AMS pioneered the concept of Aboriginal Community controlled healthcare and was founded as a co-operative to provide healthcare services to the local Aboriginal Community in and around Redfern to overcome the neglect and racism Aboriginal people were experiencing in mainstream health services. Initially set up in Redfern as a shopfront in Regent Street, and later moved to Turner Street on land donated by the Sisters of Mercy, the service was staffed by volunteer doctors, nurses, nuns and medical students in the early days.
